Library Services:

The library exists to give each RHS student access to print and digital resources to help them with their schoolwork and pursuit of independent learning. The teacher librarian can help students with book selection, research, and homework during library hours. The library also offers the following programs to help support the classroom:

  • Lesson Collaboration: The TL can help you build your research lesson.
  • Book talks and book passes: The TL promotes a variety of high interest books AND eBooks to encourage independent reading.
  • Library Orientation: 9th grade English, ESL, and special education teachers are invited to bring their classes to the library for an orientation lesson so that new students will feel comfortable when finding books or information for assignments.
  • Customized Collection Development: The TL welcomes suggestions from faculty for additions to the collection.
  • Resource gathering: The TL would be happy to collect relevant library resources to support your instruction. Just let Ms. Ellis know what you need!
  • Resource preparation: The TL can prepare bibliographies, online resources, and reading lists for you and/or your students.
  • Genre Studies: The TL will offer presentations on genre and how to find books in genres that match students’ personal interests.
  • Online Resources Orientation: The TL will introduce your students to using our library website, Digital Library, Destiny Quest Catalog and Destiny Quest app in order to give them full online access to our resources. She can also teach students to log in to resources such as LAUSD MyMail, Google Drive, Schoology, Accelerated Reader, Achieve 3000, and our Axis 360 eBook app.

Ms. Ellis also maintains the library computer lab, a student Makerspace with lots of cool gizmos and gadgets, and the RHS yearbook archives.

Mission Statement

The Roosevelt High School library works to support the Common Core learning standards and help students to access, evaluate, and use information by integrating information & digital literacy skills into all areas of learning. We seek to create a nurturing, information-rich environment for the RHS community and support students in exploring their personal interests through reading and research.

Vision

We strive to ensure that:

  • California will lead the nation in student achievement because educational leaders support strong school libraries.
  • Students will be dynamic, critical, and ethical users of technology.
  • Students will be enthusiastic users of libraries and life-long readers and learners.

We also acknowledge the American Association of School Librarian’s Standards for the 21st Century Learner, and the common beliefs that underlie them:

  • Reading is a window to the world.
  • Inquiry provides a framework for learning.
  • Ethical behavior in the use of information must be taught.
  • Technology skills are crucial for future employment needs.
  • Equitable access is a key component for education.
