A Tradition of Excellence

Drawing from 1930's Yearbook The History and the Traditions
Located in the Boyle Heights community Roosevelt High School was founded in 1922. Since that time the school has undergone many changes. The Student Body has quadrupled in size, growing from an enrollment of 961 in grades seven through twelve to its present enrollment of 5000 students in grades nine through twelve. The original school had only one building, the "R" Building (minus the South Wing; which was added later). Despite all of the physical changes that have taken place at Roosevelt, the guiding spirit of the school has remained constant. Over the years certain ideas and ways of doing things have been handed down from class to class. Our Alma Mater, our motto, our school colors are some of these traditions. Along with these traditions is a spirit of friendship and cooperation in the classroom, on the playing field, and throughout the campus where students meet. Alma Mater From the first new light of dawning To the fading of the Sky In our treasured world of memories We will hold to Roosevelt High As we go through life together Or wherever we may be, To our honored Alma Mater We will pledge our loyalty. Motto And Colors - Theodore Roosevelt, the President of the United States said it, “Don’t flinch, don't foul, hit the line hard." Our motto sums up the attitudes of Roosevelt students past and present. The school colors are cardinal, gold and blue. The cardinal stands for loyalty and courage, the characteristics of the Roosevelt student. Gold symbolizes the value that thestudents at Roosevelt place on the things they accomplish, the friendships they make with their fellow students and teachers, and the fun they have while at Roosevelt. Royal Blue symbolizes truth. The Bust Of Teddy Roosevelt - The bust of Theodore Roosevelt that is located in the Principal's Office was unveiled in May, 1925. This slightly larger than life size bust was purchased from funds which were derived entirely from student efforts. The student body raised the $1250 it cost to have Harold Schwartz design and cast into bronze this work of art. It is interesting to note that our Theodore Roosevelt High School has a special franchise with the artist which states that no other school may use the same bust design. Nicknames And Mascot - Theodore Roosevelt was a colonel in the Rough Riders, a volunteer regiment which served flamboyantly in the Spanish-American War. From these historical facts the school has taken its nicknames: The Teds, the Rough Riders, and the Colonels. Also from the nickname of Theodore Roosevelt comes the student mascot, the Teddy Bear. The Rough Rider - The Rough Rider is Roosevelt's newspaper. It has been published continuously since 1924 when sports announcer Sam Balter, was its first editor. The Rough Rider not only stimulates and informs the student body, but it also provides journalism students an opportunity to participate in an exciting activity while at the same time earning credits towards their graduation.
